DAFT Visa Timeline: How Long Does DAFT Take? (Real Experience)

This is my personal experience through the process of obtaining my DAFT visa from the Netherlands. The whole process took me exactly 4 months.

Use this DAFT Visa timeline as an estimate of how long it will take you.

Dutch American Friendship Treaty Timeline

It took me exactly 4 months from the time I started my DAFT Visa application to when I picked up my official residence card. I was out of the country for a few months during this process. I could have actually picked up my residence card sooner (a few weeks sooner).

The time it takes to obtain your DAFT Visa may be completely different. I hope this will give you an idea of what to expect from the turnaround times during the process.

Your Questions Answered

Yes, while the timeline shown here took exactly 4 months, processing times can vary. Factors that may extend your timeline include IND processing delays (current processing times are 2-3 months for final approval), missing documentation, municipality appointment availability for BSN registration, KVK registration delays, and bank account setup time. Plan for 3-6 months total to be safe, especially during busy periods or if you need additional documentation.

Yes! You can start working as soon as you receive your residence sticker from the IND biometrics appointment, which typically happens within 1-2 weeks of arrival. Timeline: Day 1-7 arrive on 90-day tourist visa, Day 7-14 attend IND biometrics appointment and receive residence sticker, from Day 14 you’re legally authorized to work and live in the Netherlands, Month 2-3 receive final DAFT approval. This residence sticker immediately grants you work and residence rights while awaiting final approval.

The general rule: Choose based on your expected annual profits. Choose ZZP (Sole Proprietorship) if you expect to make under €66,000/year in profits, want simpler administration and setup, you’re just starting out, or prefer lower setup costs (€65 registration fee). Choose BV (Corporation) if you expect €66,000+ annual profits, want access to the 30% ruling, prefer limited liability protection, or want more complex but better tax optimization opportunities. Most DAFT applicants start with ZZP since it’s simpler and you can always convert to a BV later as your income grows. Learn more about choosing a BV or ZZP.

Yes! Your spouse and children under 18 can join you on the DAFT visa. Your spouse/partner can work in regular employment OR self-employment after DAFT approval, children under 18 can attend Dutch schools and eventually work, and all family members get residence permits for the same duration as yours. Additional fees: spouse/partner €243 IND fee, each child €81 IND fee. Important: Only the main DAFT holder must remain self-employed. Your spouse can take regular employment, which many families find beneficial for stable income and benefits.

You can extend your DAFT visa for 5 more years, and eventually apply for permanent residence or citizenship. Renewal timeline: Year 2 apply for 5-year extension before current visa expires, Year 7 apply for permanent residence permit OR Dutch citizenship. Requirements include continued self-employment in the Netherlands, maintained €4,500 business bank account balance, no criminal record, and evidence of ongoing business activities. DAFT renewals have very high approval rates when requirements are maintained properly. Learn more about renewing your DAFT visa.

Yes, but timing matters. The timeline example shows being out of the country for a few months during the process. Before your biometrics appointment you have limited travel on a tourist visa. After receiving your residence sticker you’re free to travel within the Schengen area. During processing you can travel but must return for any IND appointments. Ensure someone can receive IND correspondence at your registered address. Tips: set up mail forwarding or have a trusted contact check your mail, keep your phone accessible for potential IND contact, and plan return travel with some flexibility for unexpected appointments.

Popular options include Wise (€50 one-time fee, great for international transfers and multiple currencies), N26 (€0 monthly fee, German-based so you don’t need Dutch BSN/KVK initially), and ING (traditional Dutch bank with English services, free for first 6 months then ~€10/month). The IND has confirmed that holding your €4,500 in a German bank account like N26 is acceptable. Most applicants prefer Wise for its low international transfer fees if you’re moving money from the US.
