Best Way to Transfer Money Internationally

Posted on April 14, 2019March 2, 2023 by Drew Fossen

It took me a while to find the best way to transfer money internationally. I tried PayPal, XOOM, OFX, MoneyGram, and bank transfers. Nothing even came close to Wise (AKA TransferWise).

Wise allows you to send money internationally using the real-time exchange rate, with minimal fees. They have a Borderless Bank account feature, which allows you to easily convert your money to different currencies and transfer between bank accounts in different countries. You can check this out by using the link at the bottom of this page.

Wise Fees (US to The Netherlands)

If you are sending money between bank accounts from the US to the Netherlands, you will pay 3 small fees:

  • 0.33 USD (Fixed Transfer Fee)
  • 0.42% of remaining amount (Variable Fee)
  • €0.28 flat fee (TransferWise to ING Bank Fee)

To give you an idea, if I transferred $1000 from my US bank account to my Netherlands bank account, I would pay $4.51 in total fees.

These fees absolutely blow all of the other services out of the water. By using TransferWise, you get to keep as much of your money as possible. This makes it easily the best way to transfer money internationally.
